Buffs, also known as buffing wheels, feature folds or pleats designed to hold buffing compound while facilitating air circulation. Airway buffs typically incorporate a central cinch ring, sewn core, metal ring, or ventilated center. These buffs may also be referred to as pocketed, folded, pleated airway, ventilated, accordion-pleated, hot pleated (hot pleat), or sewn pleated (sew pleat). Buffing wheels, a common type of buff, serve as abrasive tools utilized to refine and polish metal jewelry while applying a polishing compound. As the compound is applied to the wheel, it rotates consistently, effectively utilizing the polishing compound to impart a smooth, lustrous finish to the jewelry piece, enhancing its aesthetic appeal.
